Some would argue that the dental health of children is even more important than that of adults. At Gentle Dental Care, a pediatric dentist in Lansing MI, we hold children’s dental health in the highest regard. A child with healthy teeth will almost always grow up to be an adult with healthy teeth.
Dental decay takes years to manifest, and that’s something we’ve witnessed here at Gentle Dental Care. That’s why we’re keen on providing children’s dentistry near you. The longer you keep your child’s dental health in good shape, the longer they’ll continue to have great dental health when they grow up.
Fluoride is present in almost every commercial toothpaste. Through fluoride treatments, we can provide children’s teeth with high concentrations of fluoride in a short period. The hardest part is calculating the necessary dose based on the child’s age and weight. It’s not a good idea to do this at home without supervision because using too much fluoride can damage teeth.
We apply the fluoride using a brush, gel, or small cups containing fluoride that are placed over teeth. Fluoride will strengthen your child’s teeth and stop any ongoing decay. It’s usually best not to eat or drink for about 30 to 60 minutes after a fluoride treatment to give the teeth a chance to absorb it.
Dental sealant is a procedure where we seal up tiny grooves present on hind teeth. They can be used by bacteria as hiding spots where they can avoid the toothbrush and toothpaste. If left uncontrolled, bacteria will continue to grow and replicate, ultimately causing problems.
We use resin as a sealant to shut these grooves. This procedure might have to be repeated as the resin wears off. It’s recommended for children ages 5 to 15 as this is the riskiest period where most dental caries develop.
Fluoride treatments and dental sealants are prophylactic treatments done in children, but adults can get them too. Most insurance policies will cover them for children but not adults, though. To find out more, get in touch with our kids near you.
